Project Idea

The shortage of skilled workers poses major challenges for many companies – especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). At the same time, modern AI technologies are opening up new possibilities for using knowledge more efficiently, automating processes, and deploying existing skilled workers more targeted. The IMPACT project (Innovative and intelligent Management of Processes, personnel Abilities and Competencies through hybrid-AI-based Technologies) develops practical AI solutions that help companies optimize their human resources, sustainably preserve knowledge, and design work processes more intelligently.

Motivation & Goals

Shortage of Skilled Workers as a Central Challenge
Many companies – especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – face the challenge of attracting qualified skilled workers, securing knowledge within the company in the long term, and at the same time meeting increasing demands for quality, documentation, and efficiency. Particularly knowledge-intensive activities are often characterized by personnel shortages, informal experiential knowledge, and high manual effort.

At the same time, current developments in the field of artificial intelligence offer the possibility to specifically support employees, make knowledge more accessible, and make processes more efficient. However, the use of such technologies often fails due to lack of resources, insufficient AI expertise, or high integration efforts.

Project Objectives
IMPACT aims to provide companies with a practical and low-threshold access to modern AI technologies. The focus is not on full automation or replacement of employees, but on the intelligent support of skilled workers through hybrid AI systems.

Specifically, the project addresses the following objectives:

  • More efficient use of existing human resources through AI-supported personnel deployment planning
  • Early identification of qualification needs and knowledge gaps
  • Strategic planning of continuing education measures and competency development
  • Automation of repetitive knowledge and documentation tasks
  • Preservation and reuse of corporate and experiential knowledge
  • Increased flexibility and resilience of business and production processes
  • Promotion of knowledge and technology transfer between research and industry

In the long term, IMPACT aims to enable companies to use AI technologies independently and thus sustainably strengthen their innovation capacity, competitiveness, and future viability.

Method & Technical Implementation

Hybrid AI as a Core Principle
IMPACT combines various AI technologies to connect the strengths of individual methods. Generative AI enables language processing and knowledge retrieval, while semantic technologies and knowledge graphs allow comprehensible modeling of processes and competencies.

The IMPACT Framework
The core of the project is a modular platform combining:

  • Large Language Models (LLMs) & Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
  • Knowledge graphs and semantic technologies
  • Experience-based AI (Case-Based Reasoning)
  • Digital twins of employees and organizations
  • Agent-based modeling and simulation

Digital Twins & Knowledge Management
IMPACT develops digital representations of personnel, competencies, and processes – from qualifications and availability to process steps. These models form the basis for simulation-based analyses. Documents, standards, and experiential knowledge are structured and made accessible using RAG and generative AI.

Practice-Oriented Development
All technologies are developed and validated together with companies. The two central demonstrators focus on AI-supported personnel planning in service processes and AI-based support of production processes.

In knowledge-intensive service companies, IMPACT supports the planning and execution of complex projects. Key areas:

  • Skill matching between employees and tasks
  • Analysis of availability and certifications
  • AI-supported task planning
  • Strategic continuing education planning
  • Bottleneck and risk analysis
  • Support in report creation and knowledge management
The pilot partner is the Trier engineering firm Dr. Jung und Lang Ingenieure (jl-ingenieure).

In the production environment, employees are supported by AI-based knowledge and assistance systems. Key areas:

  • Documentation of experiential knowledge
  • Intelligent knowledge provision at the workplace
  • Support for new employees
  • Analysis of process workflows
  • Identification of knowledge gaps
  • Flexible adaptation of production processes
The pilot partner is Zahnen Technik GmbH.

About the Project IMPACT

Participation

IMPACT is an open innovation platform for companies in the Trier region and Rhineland-Palatinate. Companies can participate as practical partners, pilot users, associated partners, or participants in the IMPACT AI Lab. Opportunities for participation:

  • Participation in workshops and exchange formats
  • Contribution of own challenges and use cases
  • Involvement in requirements analysis
  • Evaluation of demonstrators
  • Testing of new AI technologies
  • Exchange with research institutions and other companies
By participating, companies gain early access to current developments in the field of artificial intelligence and can directly influence research with their requirements.
